Read Up, a program of the National Children’s Reading Foundation (CRF), is designed to address summer slide by distributing reading materials at summer school programs and community sites. Books are given at weekly events where families gather to hear stories read and parents learn about the importance of reading daily. During the summers of 2013 and 2014, Read-Up events were held at a total of 16 Las Cruces Public Schools (LCPS), 51 community centers, agencies and parks throughout the county and at all three local libraries. In two years, 44,000 books provided by CRF have been given to families.
